Across the forboding southern sea lies tranquil and mysterious Sekai, a land of transcendent beauty, fascinating culture, and strange magic. Shrouded by powerful magic maintained by the country’s god-Emperor, Sekai has hidden from the world since the last part of the Third Age. Only recently, with the Emperor’s death, have the mists parted and the land of Sekai become accessible (some would say vulnerable) to the rest of the world. Powerful magic permeates the Land of Ghosts, creating places of dangerous wonder; from placid groves of ever-blooming cherry blossom trees to haunted, primeval forests and lakes of dark water to misty mountains which appear and disappear on strange whims, the land of Sekai is alive and full of spirits. Known to the locals as Kami, the Medicon of Sekai are much more active and prevalent than elsewhere on Thera, many having fled The Harrowing of the Second Age to hide within the forests and mountains of Sekai where they feed and feed on the cycle of mystical energies that flow throughout the continent. Many of these little gods even dwell among mortals, walking among them in wondrous physical forms which native Kaizen often give little notice of. Indeed, native Kaizen who leave their enchanted lands often find the outside world to be dull and spiritually dead compared to the atmosphere of wonder and mysticism they are accustomed to.
A land stepped in natural beauty and profoundly shaped by subtle yet prevalent magic, Sekai is a land like no other. There is no shortage of wonders to be seen here, from Sekai’s lush, jade hills to the fertile valleys, plains, and farmlands to unique geographical features such as peaks jutting up from the ground in moss-covered spikes and pillars. Many of the land’s unique features can be attributed to natural geographical processes while others merit a more supernatural explanation. Whatever the reason for their existence, one can travel the breadth of Sekai and still only behold a fraction of the wonders it hides.
Sekai is divided into five regions, each of which corresponds to one of the five elements of Kaizen philosophy. Everything from the culture to the geography of these lands is embodied by the mystical element which the land reflects. From the impulsive and war-like people of Ho-Shen, the Land of Fire to the peaceful and adaptable people of Shima, the Land of Water, the nations of Sekai are profoundly influenced by the flow of magic through their land. This flow is expressed by the Kaizen’s magical philosophy which holds that there are five elements which comprise the core make up of the world. Earth, Fire, Water, Wind, and Metal encompass not only the entire mystical gamut of Kaizen philosophy, but embody the physical, cultural, and metaphysical aspects of Sekai’s five key regions.

Sweeping plains and green hills comprise the steadfast and fertile Land of Earth. Entei is the largest territory in Yokai and was once breadbasket of the Empire. The region has fallen into chaos as of late under the reign of its child king, Xi-Xian whose ridiculous laws and tyrannical taxes threaten to unravel the once stable nation.
The southern plains of Yokai are a hot and desolate place ruled by the Horselords and the Court of Red Jade. For ages, the Land of Fire has been renown for its warriors. Yet today, Ho-Shen is more akin to a dying ember since the death of its last great Horselord and the ensuing political and economic upheaval.
Former seat of the Golden Empire, the realm of Nakaga is a place of industry and mechanical wonders scarcely seen outside Yokai. Power in the Land of Metal was consolidated by the nation's military following Yushio's death. Nakaga now sets its sights on conquering the rest of Yokai and reestablishing Yushio's throne.
As the waters of Shima meet the land, the ground sharply rises into serene peaks. The Land of Air is a simple and spiritual place once ruled by a wise council of priests. In the year's since the death of Yushio, the council has split, plunging the once peaceful nation into lawlessness.
Adaptable, uncomplicated, and free, the isles of Shima embody the qualities of the sea and are thus known collectively as the Land of Water. The once sleepy coastal villages and tiny islands now bustle with a sudden influx of foreign trade and refugees desperate to escape Yokai's current turmoil. |
