Alchemy

Alchemy is the semi-magical art of mixing Mysterious substances together to create wondrous potions of all kinds. These brews can range from the mundane, treating warts and bad breath, to the truly fantastic, instantly healing wounds and giving dragon's breath. While there is a little Mystery bottled in every vial, society is generally more tolerant of alchemists than they are other workers of wonder, regarding them more as a strange breed of doctor or pharmacist. Fortunately for adventurers, this means that alchemy items can be acquired almost anywhere.
There are several things one should keep in mind when considering Alchemy Items:
  • Prices are listed per Rank, meaning that an item valued at 25 Crowns at Rank I is worth four times as much (100 Crowns) at Rank IV.
  • Alchemy Items weigh .25 Stones, meaning you can carry a stack of 4 in one item slot (Stone).
  • All Alchemy Items are Consumables, meaning that once used, they are gone (but more can be found, purchased, or brewed).
  • Multiple effects from the same source do not stack. For example, if a character is rapidly healing under the effects of a regenerative potion, he could not increase that effect by using the same potion again. Using the same item again while its effect is still active just overwrites the previous instance of the effect.

Side-Effects

Though potions offer strange and wonderful effects, they can take their toll on the body that imbibes them. When a potion you take has a Side-Effect, roll a d20 and consult the chart below or spend a Resolve dice (of the appropriate size) to ignore the Side-Effect and avoid rolling altogether.

Side-Effects are described as Mild, Moderate, or Severe. The severity of a Side-Effect determines how long it lasts, the Resolve required to ignore it, and how you roll on the Side-Effects table.
Mild
  • Lasts until your next Full Rest ends
  • Spend a Resolve dice of 1d6 (or greater) to ignore
  • To determine Side-Effect, roll two d20 and use the higher roll
Moderate
  • You may Save to end the effect when your next Full Rest ends
  • Spend a Resolve dice of 1d8 (or greater) to ignore
  • To determine Side-Effect, roll a d20 and consult the chart
Severe
  • Save (with Disadvantage) to end after your next Full Rest ends
  • Spend a Resolve dice of 1d10 (or greater) to ignore
  • To determine Side-Effect, roll two d20 and use the lower roll

Types of Alchemy Items

Picture

Decoctions

Powerful items brewed from the remains of magical beings, Decoctions confer a long-lasting benefit to the drinker.
Because of its foul taste, thickness, and potency, it takes a full 5 minutes to get a decoction down. Thus, one cannot be taken in the heat of a battle or perilous situation.

The effects of a decoction wear off after your next Full Rest.

You cannot force-feed a decoction to anyone; the subject must be willing to take in the substance for it to work.
Picture

Explosives

Volatile and dangerous, explosives fill a large area with poisonous gas, destructive force, or some other effect.
Use a Minor Action to throw an explosive up to 20 meters. It detonates on impact.

An explosive's effect fills a 3x3 meter area centered on the space it was thrown into. All creatures in the area of effect must Save or be subjected to the effect of the explosive.
Picture

Poisons

Just as potions have wonderful and generally beneficial effects, poisons are made with a mind to harm, weaken, and control.
Use a Minor Action to poison a weapon. The next creature hit by the weapon suffers the poison's effect.

You can also poison food or drink - the difficulty to detect the poison is equal to your Skill rating.

You can force-feed poison to a creature that is restrained, unconscious, or otherwise helpless to resist.
Picture

Potions

Potions are wondrous mixtures that confer a powerful but short-lived effect upon the one who uses them.
Use a Minor Action to apply a potion to yourself or a willing creature that is adjacent to you.

You can force-feed a potion to a creature that is restrained, unconscious, or otherwise helpless to resist.

Brewing Alchemy Items

Picture
Characters with the Alchemy Proficiency can create alchemy items from found or purchased materials. All that is required is Proficiency, the right materials, and a proper workshop. The recipe to create each item is given in each item's description.

Each Alchemy item consists of a Base, a Reagent, and one other ingredient typically related to the potion's rarity. The specific combination of ingredients necessary to create an alchemy item appear in each item's description. Even if two items have the same ingredients, the processes involved in the item's creation are as different as night and day.
The Base determines how strong the item created is. Any Base can be used to create an alchemy item, but using a stronger (and thus rarer and more expensive) base results in a stronger potion. There are five bases (and thus five possible outcomes for every formula), each assigned a Roman numeral I (Nigredo), II (Albed0), III (Citrine), IV (Rubedo), or V (Iliaster). The Roman numeral appearing after a potion's name indicates both its level of potency and which Base is used to create it (so a potion labeled "Azoth IV" indicates that it is quite powerful as it was created using Rubedo as its base).

The Reagent determines what kind of alchemy item is created; a decoction (using Alkahest), a potion (using Aqua Regis), an explosive (using Firedust), or a poison (using Protovenom). A rare "universal reagent" called Ignis Mithal can also be used in place of any other Reagent to create an item of the alchemist's choice.
To create an Alchemy Item:
  • Make sure you have Alchemy Proficiency and are in a suitably equipped lab.
  • Decide what item you'd like to create (depending on the recipes you know).
  • Combine your Base, Reagent, and other Ingredients and roll an Intellect Feat. If using Ignis Mithal as a Reagent, you have Advantage.
  • For each Bump, you create one item.

Bases

Base determines how powerful an item's end effect will be. Any Base can be used to create an alchemy item. The Roman numeral in each alchemy item's description describes what happens when Nigredo (I), Albedo (II), Citrine (III), Rubedo (IV), or Iliaster (V) is used to create the item.

Other Ingredients

Picture

Aether

Valued at 18 Crowns
At room temperature, Aether is a whispy white gas. Once temperatures begin to cool however, it solidifies into a translucent white crystal which acts as a powerful ingredient.
Picture

Alchemic Ash

Valued at 2 Crowns
Originally the result of a botched potion, Alchemic Ash is a fine golden dust discovered to be reactive in a variety of applications, making it one of the most basic (and affordable) ingredients.
Picture

Bismuth

Valued at 4 Crowns
Metallic crystals that shine with the many colors of the rainbow, Bismuth is the product of a days-long chemical reaction. Its volatile nature often sees it used in explosives of varying kinds.
Picture

Cadmia

Valued at 8 Crowns
A chalky white substance that is quite toxic on its own, but reacts easily with other chemicals. Its reactivity and availability sees Cadmia used across a wide range of applications.
Picture

Cavenic Gas

Valued at 16 Crowns
This green gas is a strong conductor of electricity. At extremely low temperatures it becomes a sickly green liquid, but is normally combined with other chemicals in its gaseous form.
Picture

Espadine

Valued at 6 Crowns
A yellow crystal that grows in tiny clusters at the end of a fairly simple chemical reaction, Espadine is notoriously difficult to work with due to its reactivity with oxygen.
Picture

Ethesia

Valued at 10 Crowns
A thick, blood red liquid that boils at body temperature, Ethesia is extremely reactive with other chemicals. Though safe, its reactions are always highly dramatic.
Picture

King's Yellow

Valued at 14 Crowns
This yellow dust is highly toxic if inhaled, making it dangerous to work with. It's most prominent use is in poisons that weaken the body or affect the mind.
Picture

Mosaic Foam

Valued at 20 Crowns
A foamy substance the color of rainbows, Mosaic Foam constantly changes shapes with even the slightest variation in temperature, moisture, or atmosphere.
Picture

Quicksilver

Valued at 12 Crowns
Also known as liquid metal, this semi-solid has a metallic sheen to it. Associated with permanence and rigidity, this chemical is quite versatile under the right conditions.

Decoction Ingredients

The following items are used in the creation of powerful Decoctions. They are most readily obtained from the corpses of powerful (usually "boss" type) monsters and are rarely (if ever) sold in stores.
