Known History
Most of The Sphere's people know nothing of history, at least history on the grand, sweeping, cosmic scale described here. They may know who begat who within their local community, a handful of legends, and the significance behind some national holidays, but as far as the true history of The Sphere is concerned, commoners are completely ignorant. Though every religion offers some explanation, no living mortal really knows how The Sphere came to be, why Man was created, or the motive of the Celestials to preside over Creation. Since The Collapse, all that is left to Mankind are fragments of the true history. But even the most erudite scholars admit that what is considered fact about previous times and epochs is mostly well-informed guesswork. Little to nothing is truly known about the origins of The Sphere, the nature of its creators, and the lurking horror that threatens all life from the blackest fathoms of the cosmos.
Presented here is the full and true history of The Sphere, as no living mortal has ever known it. The information on this page is given purely for the sake of players and GMs. Player characters are unlikely to know even a fraction of this history - at most, they may know a few widely held beliefs about the previous Eras, along with a jumble of opinions, conjecture, and outright falsehoods. Even the oldest spirits and dragons remember little before The Collapse. There are none now who recall a time before Creation first dawned.

The Creation
The oldest tales tell of the Celestials, the gods who would become the creators of Mankind. These beings were born from the dreams of the Elder Gods, those fathomless alien entities who sleep in abysmal darkness beneath time and space. For countless eternities, the gods were enslaved to the will of the Outer Ones. By guile and trickery, the Celestials escaped their bondage and stole the power of Creation from their former masters. With this tool in hand, the gods fashioned for themselves a haven from the rule of the Elder Gods, a place they called The Sphere.
Within the Sphere, the Celestials became stars, nebulae, and planets, creating flora, fauna, and mortals to live upon their worlds. The nature of each god profoundly influenced the development of life, all features and creatures an expression of the god-world's character. Yet the influence of the Celestials would not be limited to the lives on their own worlds, but pivotal to all of Creation. Just as each cog within a clock plays a unique and vital role, so too would various domains within the Cosmic Machine hinge upon the spirit of each Celestial. In mortal reckoning, the Celestials each govern a specific facet of life such as time, storms, war, or the harvest. In reality, most Celestials have little to do with facets of reality Men understand, their purposes fixed on a grander cosmic scale. In devoting their attention to creating and sustaining life within The Sphere, the Celestials failed to apprehend the darkness that encroached upon their realm. The nightmarish children of the Elder Gods seeped into Creation like a cancer, corrupting and destroying the work of the gods in service to the wrath of their dark masters. They became a blight upon the worlds, inscrutable horrors stalking Mankind from the shadows. Evermore the Celestials would contend to keep the influence of the Elder Gods at bay, unable to heed the prayers and pleas of Man lest their limited strength crumble before the hungering darkness that lurks beyond the pale of Creation's light. |
In the ages before Man, the Celestials escaped their slavery to the Elder Gods and stole the power of creation. With it, they fashioned The Sphere as a haven for themselves and became its planets, stars, and heavenly bodies.

Guardians of MankindUnable to watch over the minutia of Creation, the gods were forced to entrust the governance of their world to lesser beings. To govern the creatures and elemental forces of the physical worlds, the gods fashioned servants and tasked them with the stewardship of Creation and the guardianship of Mankind. Fearful of the machinations of the Elder Gods and their power to corrupt, the Celestials created Dragons, great behemoths of majestic power charged with the task of both fighting the influence of the Ancient Ones and keeping the progress of Mankind in check. The Dragons were to insure that Mankind’s ambition never led to a position from which mortals could usurp their power as they once did to the Elder Gods. Each Dragon interprets his divine charge differently. Some believe that Man must be sabotaged and kept in darkness or ruthlessly brought to heel. Others feel that elevating and educating the mortal mind is the key to peace and prosperity. The Dragons spend as much time striving against one another as they do watching over the affairs of Men, each convinced of their superiority and the rightness of their way. Dragons are glorious and powerful creatures, capable of flight, able to breathe fire, and covered in nigh impenetrable scales. They also possess a deep understanding of The Mystery, holding sway over the elements and wielding the power to bend the laws of time and nature. To govern the natural world, the gods created Medicon. Called spirits, elementals, or petty gods by Mankind, these beings are bound to the god-planets they serve upon, acting in accordance with the character and desires of the Celestial who made them. In a perfect Sphere, this would mean the Medicon serve the interests of the planet above their own, but most of the time this is not the case. Medicon bicker and struggle against one another for power, worship, and affluence. To this end, the spirits array themselves in hierarchical Spirit Courts, the great and powerful governing vast swaths of wilderness while the least among them rule over a single tree or stone within their Lord or Lady’s domain, ever ambitious and scheming to extend their influence. A Medicon’s appearance reflects the element or geography it is tied to. A lake spirit might have mossy hair, blue skin, and a voice like lapping waves while a mountain spirit may be large and made of stone with a disposition to match. Though capable of manifesting corporeally, the spirits and their Courts are usually invisible to mortal eyes, spending most of their time in the unseen realm of souls. Spirits have a great deal of interaction with mortals, especially Men living on the frontiers away from the heart of civilization (yet even in the midst of great cities, some Medicon find a niche). Though many mortals worship their local spirits, offering them gifts and ritual sacrifice, the relationship between Man and spirit has always been somewhat strained with the Medicon treating Men as commodities at best and adversaries at worst. |
dreams of The Elder GodsBeyond the edges of the known universe, in strange fathoms sleep terrible, primordial horrors so far beyond the scope of time and mortality they cannot comprehend such infinitesimal notions. Spoken of in hushed whispers among only the most erudite of scholars and cultists, these "Elder Gods" of unknowable, alien minds have always been, always were, and always will be; they are endless beings with no beginning and no foreseeable end. For as long as they have existed, the Elder Gods have slept deeply in the twilight beneath reality, dreaming dark and terrible dreams. Mana is the result of their dreaming, much in the same way that heat comes from a fire. Since a time before Creation, the Elder Gods have slept and dreamed, inadvertently weaving the web that connects all life and holds reality together. Thus, the very fabric of all that is hinges on the slumber of these ancient, incomprehensible beings. The sole desire of the Elder Gods is to awaken from their torpor. If ever they were to wake, all that is would end as the Mana which binds all together came unwound. In their unconscious state, the Elder Gods are unable to rouse themselves. The only way they may waken is if a great enough calamity within reality causes them to stir. To this end, the Ancient Ones have subconsciously created agents of chaos who work on their behalf within Creation to punish the gods, ravage their Creation, and bring forth an apocalypse great enough to wake the Sleepers. The Raksha are eldritch horrors so terrifying that merely glimpsing their physical manifestation is enough to drive Men to madness. As timeless beings, Raksha are cunning beyond mortal comprehension and lay their plans for ruin across worlds and ages. No mortal can hope to oppose them directly and only the most powerful gods can hope to delay their inevitable cataclysms. Within Creation, the Raksha are served by many who foolishly believe they can parlay with these entities in exchange for wealth and power. Courts of evil, inhuman spirits called the Eldain also serve the goals of the Raksha. These beings darkly mirror the Medicon in power, appearance, and influence. Where the elementals hold sway over the rocks, trees, and rivers, the Eldain invoke dominion over plagues, famine, and natural disasters to torment Mankind, leading mortals to play into the hands of the Raksha in desperation. |
first era: the Mythic Age
Savage empires rose and fell as civilization took its first faltering steps during the Age of Myth.
|
As early Man endeavored to build a home from the virgin potential of his new worlds, development was far from uniform. On harsh worlds with unforgiving climes and dangerous wildlife, social growth was slow as Man's primary goal from day to day was to stay alive. On more benevolent worlds with abundant natural resources, Man's priorities shifted to scientific and cultural development after his basic needs were met. In the First Age of life, each world, each continent, each nation and city took its first steps down the path that would eventually lead to its identity.
In those days, Medicon told Mankind the stories of creation, teaching him that all creatures were individual parts of a greater whole called Mana, that it is from Mana mortal life arises and to Mana that all mortal life returns in an unending cycle of life, death, and reincarnation. They showed Mankind the pantheon of stars and planets in the heavens above, showing them ways to honor and worship their creators. Yet given a pantheon of mostly silent gods, Mankind began to worship the Medicon below instead of the Celestials above, revering the created rather than the creators. While some of the Medicon rejected the worship of Men, others slowly turned from their distant masters, growing proud and powerful on the ardor of Mankind. They established savage empires for themselves and created Spirit Courts of lesser elementals, ruling over their mortal charges as ruthless god-kings. |
Centuries passed. Culture and technology remained stagnant on bitter worlds, save for a few breakthroughs useful for making war. Conversely, the fertile, placid worlds gradually built wondrous cities of light and beauty, their skies teeming with airships, their tables overflowing with bounty. Each world grew on its own and in its own way, each planet an island unto itself. Not even the wisest of Men would have ever guessed that across the impassible darkness beyond the sky there were others developing alongside them, other Men facing the unique tribulations of their own worlds.
It was towards the end of the First Age that the Raksha who had seeped into Creation unfolded their plan to enact a destruction so great their dreaming masters would surely awaken. The corruptible nature of Man, the vengeful enemies of the gods, and the unpredictability of free will would all work in tandem to crack the foundation of the universe and rouse the Ancient Ones from their torpor. The insidious Raksha devised a way to leverage Mankind’s free will and desire for power against him, creating a calamity that would destroy both the gods and their creations in one deft move.

Second Era: The Golden Age
It was the Raksha who first taught Man the secret order behind the universe, revealing to his reeling mind the powers of The Mystery. Thus did the First Era draw to a close as the first mystics used the power shown them to subjugate their worlds, conquer their enemies, and master the primal forces that once held him in check. The Medicon and Dragons, completely taken by surprise, were unable to hold Man back from harnessing this strange new power. The stewards of creation had no choice but to watch in horror and confusion as Mankind ascended to new a new level of progress, one far beyond what the species' budding morality could govern.
Thus began the Golden Age of The Sphere, a time of incredible progress when culture, science, and technology sped forward in leaps and bounds thanks to use of The Mystery. Mankind harnessed his newfound knowledge to create the Infinity Engine, a marriage of Mystery and technology powering ships of light across The Void to discover new worlds. An era of inter-planetary exchange of goods and cultures soon followed. The Raksha also revealed to Mankind great gateways called Warpweir they had erected in secret as permanent portals between worlds. The vast expanse of void space had been conquered and Mankind was now connected across The Sphere. |
Raksha, servants of the Elder Gods, deceived Man and taught to him The Mystery. They erected Warpweir, connecting the worlds of The Sphere and ushering in a Golden Age.
|
For good or ill, the fruits of each world’s First Age were shared with all in a great era of trade and cultural exchange. Highly advanced civilizations swallowed up lesser ones through conquest, either by the sword or through the creeping subjugation of economic, political, or cultural overshadowing. Those worlds which had dealt in war for the whole of their existence raped and reaved their way across the cosmos, marching armies through the Warpweir to kill and pillage. A great many battles were fought during the first years of the Golden Age as each nation, each world fought to find its place in a volatile geopolitical landscape.
As the dust settled, new empires emerged. Vast alliances between powerful nations eventually forced an uneasy peace across The Sphere as treaties were signed, trade arrangements were made, and border disputes were settled. While inevitable skirmishes between rival factions still occurred, the great wars that had first enflamed The Sphere eventually settled into quiet disdain before slowly growing into symbiotic unity. It seemed as though the designs of the Raksha had failed as the Second Era became a remarkable and exciting time when new races and cultures intertwined for the first time in history. New goods, technologies, arts, foods, religions, philosophies, and ideas were created in a vast cultural renaissance spanning multiple worlds. Disparate races began living among one another and mystical wonders became commonplace. At the heart of it all, it was the power of The Mystery which brought about this unprecedented era of progress and prosperity. Man had eagerly taken hold of this power and used it to forge a Golden Age without thought to the consequences of such action. All power comes at a price and the cost of Mankinds ambition would prove high indeed.

Wars for power, overuse of magic, and the imprisonment of The Sphere's guardian spirits saw to the end of the Golden Age as the Elder Gods stirred from their slumber and cataclysms wracked the worlds.

The Harrowing
During this age, the superstitions of the past were cast aside in favor of science and rationale. The empires of the god-kings began to crumble as Man, with his own ingenious crafts, produced greater works than the deluded, egocentric Medicon ever could. As their empires crumbled, the Medicon and their courts of godlings were subjugated, enslaved to power great artifacts with their very souls. Dragons were hunted for their mystical properties or slain for trophies. This age of sorrows saw those Medicon and Dragons who did not flee into the far corners of the world hunted and enslaved to drive the engines of Mankind’s insatiable ambition. Bound within crystalline prisons, the power of the captive divine was used to create artifacts of incredible power. From weapons to airships to generators powering cities, the relics of the Golden Age were terrible wonders scarcely seen before or since. Overuse of The Mystery disrupted the carefully curated balance of forces within The Cosmic Machine. The Celestials did their best to dissuade Mankind from his doomed course, but without their Medicon and Dragons to maintain order, the gods were powerless to curb Mankinds ambition and keep at bay the renewed efforts of the Elder Gods to extinguish the light of Creation. Beneath the calm and polished exterior of the Golden Age’s advancements, the tensions that had pit nations against one another during the earliest days of the age churned quietly, growing slowly to a boil. Daemons and Raksha took the guise of men and infiltrated every level of government, guild, and economy, playing nations, races, and factions against one another. When Man was at the height of his glory and might, the masterful manipulation of the Elder Gods slowly goaded embers of resentment into fires of war. |
None can say for certain when, they began, but by the closing of the Second Era, an inter-planetary war known as The Harrowing had torn a bloody path across The Sphere as Mankind’s collective might turned against itself. Great armies marched through Warpweir to inflict complete annihilation. Disease ran rampant as corpses of the numberless dead were piled high with none to mourn or bury them. Mystical weapons of mass destruction fueled by captive Medicon obliterated nations in a single flash of light and heat. It was a time of unprecedented destruction where billions died and counted themselves among the fortunate...for those who survived The Harrowing were brought low by a catastrophe greater still.
As the wars of The Harrowing raged, the gods could no longer stabilize the balance of forces within The Sphere and hold back the swelling tide of cosmic evil. Their defenses were finally shattered and the legion servants of the Elder Gods washed over Creation in a flood of terror. The Harrowing came to a sudden end as the wounded and weary armies of Man turned to fight a new foe: an endless host of horrors from the darkness beyond Creation. The upheaval in heaven and the rampant destruction throughout creation unfolded exactly as the Raksha had anticipated. At long last, their obscure plans had come to fruition…for somewhere beyond the ends of the universe, The Elder Gods stirred.

Third Era: The Dark Age
Though they had not yet fully awoken, the stirring of the Elder Gods was enough to send shockwaves across the cosmos, rattling the very foundations of reality. The Harrowing came to an abrupt end as Mana’s power waned and darkness fell over the face of The Sphere. Entire races perished in an instant. Worlds fell in on themselves. Continents sunk beneath the raging sea. Mountains belched fire and ash, the ground shook and cracked, the oceans turned to blood, and the hungry dead rose to walk among the living. With the light and warmth of every sun blotted out by darkness, an ice age covered the Sphere. Civilization perished in fire and blood. Crops failed, natural disasters ravaged the land, armies of daemons, monsters, and the damned laid waste to all that was once good and green as The Collapse darkened the light of the Golden Age.
The Third Era was a brutal time of barbarism and ruin where the shape of the lands changed drastically through geographic upheavals and natural disasters. Once great cities were cast down into ruinous shadows of their former glory and the old world perished in screaming agony, all records of its existence, all remnants of its splendor buried beneath rubble, snow, and centuries. The Medicon who had escaped capture during the Second Era remained in wild places, their Courts in ruin, their powers waning, and their madness growing. Most buried themselves in dark places and despaired at the loss of all that had been. Yet some among the spirits drew worshipers to themselves once more, demanding outrageous sacrifice from the huddled, ignorant masses that relied on their power for protection from the depravities of the new world. Mankind descended into barbarism, living on whatever ashes he could scrounge up. Savage heroes, dark sorcerers, mad tyrants, and cruel kingdoms were common in those days. The knowledge of the Golden Age was forgotten, its relics cast down to the depths of the sea, its technology swallowed by the earth. Nightmarish spawn of the Elder Gods crept across the lands unchallenged, breeding and growing in number to become the many fiends that still linger in the Sphere’s dark corners to this day. |
After The Collapse, Mankind languished in savagery and despair while the gods fought to close the Elder Gods' foothold in Creation.
|
War in the Heavens
In the heavens, a battle between darkness and light dragged on through the bitter centuries of the Dark Age. The Elder Gods had begun to stir and the Raksha were confident that if this war continued, their dark masters would fully awaken. As savagery claimed the Sphere below, epic battle after battle raged in the heavens above. The gods fought to repel the invaders and repair the breach that had allowed them to enter Creation, but despite their best efforts, nothing could stem the tide of darkness. Driven to the brink of desperation, the gods enacted a measure they had hoped could be avoided but now seemed their only option.
Using all their power, nine Celestials sacrificed their lives to repair the breach and reinforce the defenses of The Sphere. Through their sacrifice, Creation was saved. However, this victory came at a great price. As immortals, these worlds could not die and yet were consumed by death and forever changed. These nine worlds fell at the close of the Third Era, fading from creation to become The Maleficati; the Nine Hells. Their thoughts are consumed by Oblivion, their only goal to end all of existence, returning Creation to void nothingness. They exist now in the space between the material realm and eternity which only the dead may see. The Nine Hells draw the souls of evil men to them in death, tormenting their spirits to madness and beyond before reincarnating them as Daemons, beings of pure evil who exist to visit suffering and death upon Mankind.
Thus The Sphere was saved from utter annihilation, but gained a powerful new enemy...one that may ultimately see to its final undoing.

At great cost, The Sphere was saved from the Elder Gods. The darkness of the Third Era passed, ushering in a new age.
Fourth Era: The Modern Age
The Dark Age closed with the end of the heavenly war and the Elder gods receded back into endless sleep. The ice melted, the clouds parted, and light shone upon the face of the Sphere once more. The power of Mana grew and Men began to rediscover crafts that had once been lost to them. Though their worlds were forever changed and new hardships awaited them at every turn, Mankind emerged from the Dark Age stronger than ever, confident in his power to survive even the apocalypse. Technology from the Golden Age was slowly unearthed, the Warpweir and Light Ships used to traverse the Void once more. So it was that the Dark Age passed and the Fourth Era dawned.
It is now a thousand years into the Modern Age: a time when civilization has been rebuilt from the ruins of The Collapse. While much from the Golden Age remains lost, Mankind is pressing ahead along a new path of progress. The face of the land has changed since the early days and the ruins of ancient temples and cities dot the landscape. Historians, adventurers, and treasure hunters search these vast, wondrous remains (many of which are buried beneath mountains or lie at the bottom of the sea), braving dark creatures, tortured souls, and terrible traps to discover wondrous Relics, advanced technology, and priceless treasures in their search to rediscover lost history. Monstrous Raksha and terrible Daemons stalk Mankind from the dark corners of Creation. Monstrous abominations, left over from ancient times, warped by The Collapse, or reincarnated by the Nine Hells wander the wild places of the world, destroying all they encounter in their insatiable appetite for chaos.
Civilization has returned from the brink with the rebuilding of great cities and townships, some right on top of the ruins of ancient metropoli. Religion is also being re-imagined as the old faiths have evolved into entirely new belief systems through the long centuries. The Medicon are making themselves known again on the outskirts of civilization, their madness and power tempered by a secret fear and resentment of Man’s past deeds. Wars between nations are being fought anew, though this time, they are most often goaded by selfish opportunism, cultural differences, or needless aggression rather than dark forces (though said forces certainly do play a part from time to time). Ultimately, the Fourth Age is a period rebirth where Man is awakening from a series of nightmares that nearly destroyed him, finding what he lost long ago, and leaving the past behind to truly come into a new age. It is an exciting time of heroism where boundless adventure, riches, glory, and fame wait for those brave enough to venture forth and claim their legacy.
